The brain is the most important as well as a delicate organ in our system which needs protection.
the brain is protected by 3 layers of different membrane
Boney covering of cranium
Meninges
Cerebrospinal fluid
Meninges are three membranous covering of the brain that lies below the skull
the first layer is the outer dura mater, also called the pachymenix, followed by the middle arachnoid mater and the inner pia mater.
Pia Mater
pia mater is a thin vascular membrane that lies closest to the brain and dips into various sulci.
the pia mater exits the cranium through the foramen magnum and runs along with the spinal cord.
below the level of L 3, the spinal cord is not present, only a pia mater is continued ad the filum terminale
Prolongations
provides sheath for canial nerves
provides perivascular sheath for minute vessels
folds of pia mater enclosing tufts of capillaries for the telachoroidea in brain ventricle.
pia mater lined by the secretory ependyma forms the choroid plexus.
